Love Letter to Yayoi Kusama
I’m sure it’s no surprise to anyone that I love Yayoi Kusama and had the best time going on several occasions to see the exhibition while it was on. I got a wee bit over excited by seeing the early silver sculptures which I first came across when art + text did a feature on her in 1995 while I was in the middle of art school. And again a bit over excited at the final infinity room - My Heart is filled to the brim with Sparkling light. I made some small sculptures for my fingers inspired by that room after my first visit and had to take them back on completion.
Mum had a similar visceral response to her work as I did and we talked at length about how the works remind of how migraines feel and how her paintings look like the hallucinations we both experience as a result of migraines and of course the infinity rooms are like being inside kaleidoscopes and how it feels that going into her infinity rooms is like the closest we could ever come to experience being inside someone else’s mind. The first time I went I came out feeling very altered and it induced vertigo perhaps and I couldn’t tell which was was up or down and was a. Very Alice in wonderland experience…. Anyway, I’ve written her a love letter and I should really send it one day…
